Children are matched with dedicated instructors who tailor their lessons around the needs and abilities of each student. Each child learns the basic fundamentals through welldeveloped activities that are fun, exciting and adventurous. After conquering Wildflower Meadow, children move on to progressively more challenging terrain on Powder Puff Express Magic Carpet and the Little Cat beginner’s chair lift. In their first lesson, children begin to learn and master the basics necessary to ski safely and to enjoy a fun experience as they: - Become familiar with the mountain environment - Learn to put on and take off their boots and skis - Walk, shuffle, and step with and without their skis - Ski in a controlled wedge (also called “pizza” or “pie”) - Learn to safely ride the lifts - Most importantly, have fun and enjoy their skiing experience Becky Daugaard, director of the day care center, with Rainbow the Clown and children visiting the center. Your 4 to 6 year old child’s first experience is in Snowbasin’s Wildflower Meadow, a large fenced area with a gentle slope that allows children to first experience the mountain environment away from the busy slopes. Here, children orient themselves to the motions of skiing by walking and playing in their skis and boots in a safe environment. The Wildflower Meadow features colorful arches, tunnels, and elephant slide; a mouse rocker and replicas of “wild animals,” all designed to spark a child’s interest and imagination. Ogden Valley Library Celebrates Dr. Seuss’ Birthday This March 2 marked the 100th anniversary of the birth of Dr. Seuss. Schools and public libraries across the state planned celebrated the event, honoring the man and his works that have become an American icon. Fortunately for millions of people, Theodor Seuss Geisel, known to generations as Dr. Seuss, continued to write and draw, even after his father told him he would never gain acclaim in literature, his junior high and high school art teachers told him his drawings would never sell, and 28 publishers rejected his first book. In his 87 years of life, Geisel completed 44 publishing cartoons and comical articles. Geisel developed the idea for his first children’s book in 1936, And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street. The story was about a boy whose imagination turned the mundane into the spectacular. Geisel wrote under his mother’s birth name, Seuss, and added the “Dr.” for the degree his father always wanted him to have. During World War II, Geisel joined the army and was sent to Hollywood. Here he wrote documentaries for the military, and also created a cartoon called Gerald McBoing Boing, which earned him the first of three Oscars. In 1984, Geisel earned a Pulitzer Prize for his work. Geisel’s first big break came in 1954 after reading a report on the problem of illiteracy among American schoolchildren. The article suggested that children were struggling because their books were boring. Geisel’s publisher challenged him to create an entertaining children’s book using 250 words or less. In response, he wrote his now famous 220-word Faith Zschiesche entertains the children at the Dr. Seuss celebration at the library. easy-reading books for kids, teaching children around the world that books could be colorful and fun to read. On March 3, the date of Dr. Seuss’s birthday, Valley Elementary students spent the day learning about the author who has delighted millions of children, of all ages, for many years, and for many children, instilling in them a love of reading. Every year Dr. Seuss’ birthday is celebrated across America, including right here in Ogden Valley at the Ogden Valley Library. This year, students enjoyed activities at the library with Faith Zschiesche and Sarah Lavato who entertained Valley students with Dr. Seuss stories and activities. During their visit to the library, each child received a handout of interesting and fun things to do for Dr. Seuss day. The children had fun making Cat in the Hat hats, sounding out rhyming words, and hearing Dr. Seuss stories. Geisel was born in Springfield, Massachusetts in 1904. He graduated from Dartmouth in 1925, but left Oxford before earning a doctorate degree in literature. Geisel initially supported his wife Helen and himself by Children making “Cat in the Hat” hats. fantasy, The Cat in the Hat, which became an immediate success. A succession of entertaining books dried up contemporary works about Dick and Jane and their dog Spot that children across the U.S. had been using to learn to read. Geisel died in 1991.
