Outgoing Stake Presidency Phillip Hale, Doug Taggart, and Mark Ferrin were given a vote of thanks by the Stake membership for the more than nine years of service to the community of Ogden Valley. “Avoid it (pornography) like the plague and don’t let it in your home. No one is exempt (from addiction to pornography).” Oaks ended by quoting Doctrine and Covenants 89:4, “ . . . In consequence of evils and designs which do and will exist in the hearts of conspiring men in the last days, I have warned you, and forewarn you . . . “ General Authority Elder Carl B. Cook was also in attendance at meetings held Saturday and Sunday in conjunction with Stake Conference. From left to right: Jim Richardson, President Bob Wood, President Doug Taggart, President Richard Jolley, and John Oliver. President Hales stated that during the past nine years, he has come to know, more than ever, that wickedness never was happiness, and that the scriptures are true. He quoted a scripture from the Book of Mormon, Mosiah 2:41, that states, “ . . . I would that ye should consider on the blessed and happy state of those that keep the commandments of God . . . “ He continued by commenting on why there are so many happy people living in the Valley . . . “It is because they are keeping the commandments. It is so much easier to be good!” He also quoted the scripture, “As God is, man can become.” “The purpose to this life is to come unto God . . . to know Him, thus to know who we are. Living the gospel brings hope, peace, and serenity into our lives.” President Hale also spoke regarding the knowledge we have regarding the personality of God, and how this knowledge was once lost to man on the earth; that the priesthood is on the earth today to bless man; and that man is still receiving revelation from prophets upon the earth today, which blesses our lives as we listen and obey.” Final words addressed to the congregation were given by visiting general authority Elder Robert C. Oaks. He gave a warning regarding the evils of our day. “Pornography and materialism are the biggest threat today against our exaltation.” He shared a number of statistics. Pornography today is a 56 billion dollar a year industry. There are over 400,000 pay for view pornographic sites. Each day, approximately 200 new porn sites are added to the web, there are 60 million visits to these sites daily, 750 million adult films are rented each year, and 70% of pornographic material ends up in the hands of children. It only takes, on average, two weeks of exposure to pornography by a 12-year-old before they become addicted. Doug Taggart was sustained as the new Stake President, with Bob Wood and Richard Holley sustained as councilors to the President. President Doug Taggart and his wife Erin Shaw Taggart have five children and four grandchildren, with a new grandchild on the way! President Taggart and Erin have lived in Liberty together for 22 years. President Taggart works in business and estate planning, and is also an attorney. He enjoys horseback riding, activities with his family, snow skiing, biking, hiking, and especially being good friends with his adult children. Together they have five children and two grandchildren. Bob grew up in Huntsville where he has lived all his life. He works as an Education Administrator. He enjoys jogging, biking, music, and spending time with his family. When asked about his new responsibilities in the Stake, he replied, “It’s my pleasure to serve.” In response to his new calling, President Richard Holley replied, “I’m looking forward to the opportunity of getting to know the great people of the Valley.” Richard and his wife MaryAnn Jackson Holley also have five children, and have lived in Huntsville for the past four years.
