Show THE OGDEN VALLEY NEWS Page 4 Volume IX Issue XI March 15, 2004 Readin’ in Eden Compiled by Shanna Francis Ogden Valley News This month, the Valley’s reading group, Readin’ in Eden, will meet on March 18. The book to be discussed is Don’t Let’s Go to the Dogs Tonight—An African childhood by Alexandra Fuller. The book is described as follows, “Alexandra Fuller remembers her African childhood with candor and sensitivity. Though it is a diary of an unruly life in an often inhospitable place, it is suffused with Fuller’s endearing ability to find laughter, even when there is little to celebrate. Fuller’s debut is unsentimental and unflinch- ing but always captivating. In wry and sometimes hilarious prose, she stares down disaster and looks back with rage and love at the life of an extraordinary family in an extraordinary time.” A national best seller, Let’s Go to the Dogs Tonight was selected as Entertainment Weekly’s #1 nonfiction book of the year. It was also chosen as a finalist for Guardian’s First Book Prize. Readin’ in Eden will be hosted by Kay Lynn Todd of Eden. The community is invited to attend to listen to or participate in the book discussion. For more information and to RSVP, please call Kay Lynn at 7458658. Eccles Community Art Center— Conversations In Art The Eccles Community Art Center’s Conversations In Art series with Esther P. Jackson will present a lecture on the work and life of English Floral Artist William Kilburn on Thursday, March 18 beginning at 7:00 p.m. This free lecture series receives funding from a grant provided by the Utah Humanities Council, an affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities. The Utah Humanities Council promotes understanding of human traditions, values, and issues through informed public discussion. During the late 18th and early 19th Century, William Kilburn (1745-1815) was known for his floral designs. He was a master of the English school of design in calico painting. Over the years, the influence of his work faded; we are just now rediscovering him. Join us in learning more about this artist and his work. The last lecture in this series will be Three Great Mexican Muralists ~ Rivera, Roozco, and Siqueiros with art historian, Lila Larsen on Thursday, May 13, 2004. A new season of Conversations In Art should begin in October of 2004. Fore more information, please call Debra at 801-392-6935 or check on-line at <www.ogden4arts.org> Are You Prepared? Eccles Community Art Center Produces Play by Local Writer The Gallery Theater, at the Eccles Community Art Center, will be presenting a play that will run March 25, 26, 27, 2004. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., curtain at 7:00 p.m. A matinee will be held on Saturday, March 27, Doors at 1:30 p.m., curtain at 2:00 p.m. Tickets are $5.00. The production is a one-act play written and co-directed by Paul Birkbeck of Huntsville. Clarence Socwell, of North Ogden, is the in-house director with Nell Heller as Technical Director. The play is called Here Come the Lions. When Marty, Joe, and Frank, associate workers at a plumbing company, find the world as they know it start to crumble, their solution is to find a place to “wait it out.” Inasmuch as Joe owns a mountain cabin, that is where they hope to survive away from all the “lions” who are taking over and destroying civilization. Marty has determined that it really is “the end of the world,” and tries to convince Frank, who has some religious convictions, that this is the only answer. Joe would rather rely on the past revealed in several classical novels for his understanding. How the three of them come to grips with the situation at hand, a visit by Ballard, a grocery store owner on his way to Montana, and their different personalities, standards, and backgrounds is the thrust of the play. Will Marty survive as the leader of the group or will each make his own contribution to their mutual survival? The audience will be entertained with these questions and the sometimes humorous solutions, and may be brought to answers about their own determinations in a similar situation. Birkbeck wrote the play for the Eccles Community Art Center as part of a play writing class taught last fall by Socwell. The cast features Nick Velis of Ogden as Marty. He has appeared in over a half dozen plays at Weber State University and Heritage Theater in Perry. Blair Randall of North Salt Lake plays Frank. Blair has appeared in Paul Birkbeck of Eden. several of the Gallery’s previous plays, including “Shards of Glass” and “Ask Sherlock.” Art Lohman of Layton, who is Joe, has appeared in several Gallery Theater plays, the latest being “Miracles Do Happen.” Richard Mikesell, who plays Ballard, is a newcomer to the stage but has appeared in several films and TV series as an extra. He lives in Ogden. For more information, contact the Eccles Community Art Center at 392-6935. Happy St. Patrick’s Day Brunch Special Buy one pay half price on the second Must bring this ad.
