Show Helping Maria: j Pennies By Inch : Three-year-old Maria walks, runs, jumps and idances, thanks to the miracle of modern surgery and the ifine staff and facilities at Primary Children's Medical :Center in Salt Lake City. MARIA Elena Nelson was born on Oct. 2, 1973. On Oct. 3 she was rushed by ambulance to the Primary Childrens' Medical Center. Maria has been born with an "open spine." The doctors told her family iat if she lived, she would be :paralyzed from the waist 4own and have several other problems as well. .' ON OCT. 4 her back was operated on and her spine was closed. Her feet were deformed at birth and during that first month of her life, she had the first operation on her feet as well. Maria has had seven 'different operations at Primary Childrens' Medical tenter and is still an out-patient at the hospital. Maria's imiracle is repeated daily at ! the hopsital. Funds for medical expenses So f needy children are desperately needed, and a special "Childrens' Funs" project was begun in 1976 to Tmeel this need. LOCAL FUND drives are being conducted again this year during February to again meet the challenge of accepting every child, regardless of ability to pay. "Pennies by the Inch" will be the theme of the 1977 drive, with each family asked to measure its members and donate at least a penny per inch to help make a child well again. SINCE THIS will be a door-to-door drive by neighbors in the various areas of the city, local families are urged to measure their inches in advance ad-vance and have their donations dona-tions ready. Your contribution can mean a new lifetime of health and happiness for a child. |
