Show I ' nEMEN WAY'S SENTENCE. The Libelous editor of Ogden Be. - ceires the Court's Clemency. - Editor Hemenway, the martyr journalist journal-ist of Ogden,.wBs arraigned before Judge Powers this morning to receive sentence. He wore a sort of self-satisfied expression, expres-sion, from which one might ha"e inferred in-ferred that he was informed beforehand, that his punishment was to be light ; and sure enoughs it proved5 to be so. The Judge decreed that the missionary editor ! 6hould pay a fine of $200 and all costs, on the first case, and that sentence in the other two cases would be suspended. It is understood that Hemenway has been permitted for some weeks past to use the columns of the Ogden Herald in self- euiogies ior xne purpose oi awakening enough sympathy to cover the fine when it should be imposed. It will therefore not surprise those of the public who are familiar famil-iar with the facts to learn that the required ducats have been paid over and the gaping doors of the penitentiary denied the privilege of receiving the distinguished distin-guished literateur. It was still feared by his friends, however, that his burning desire de-sire to pose as a martyr would . smother his discretion and that his fine would possibly pos-sibly be paid after all in the durance vile. Judge Powers consented to postpone the cases of unlawful cohabitation against C. F. Middleton and W. G. Childs. |
