Show Kiralfy's "Around the World." Of course the name of the Kiralfys always al-ways suggests the spectacular drama,-and with the suggestion come remembrances of such pieces as the "Black Crook" and "Excelsior," the latter magnificent production pro-duction being the subject of unstinted praise when produced here about a year and a half ago, and going far to establish the reputation of its organizers. The large audience at the Theater last night were doomed to disappointment, however, if they expected to witness anything to compare favorably with "Excelsior" "Around the World" does not in either scenery, effects or ballet and it is this comparison that was manifestly drawn by the audience last night. Otherwise, had the play been put through in a sprightly manner, no disappointment might have been felt. The musical street pavers are a fine feature, but the ballet is the card of the performance, "L'amour et Cigarette" and the "Jersey Light Guards" receiving two or three encores. en-cores. Mile. Rose, the star dancer, was honored by several recalls, and made the hit of the evening. The costuming of the ballot is not extensive, but what there is of it presents a glittering appearance; while the appearance of a trained elephant ele-phant on the stage is a spectacle itself. A relief to the audience would be to abolish the singing in the first act, for truly, it has never been equaled in this city. The company will repeat the piece to-night and to-morrow night. |
