Show Starts at 10:00 a.m. - Stake track finals set Friday,. Saturday at WSC By TOM HARALDSEN OGDEN The finale of the 1 987 high school track and field season takes place this weekend at Weber State College, with the 4-A state championships. Preliminaries are slated for Friday, with the finals in most events scheduled for Saturday Satur-day morning and aftrernoon. Layton is a slight favorite to win the boy's title, while defending champ Weber appears to have the best shot of taking the girls' crown. All four local schools will be well represented in this year's events. Top entries locally are, among the boys, York Major of Davis in the long jump and 400 meters, Bountiful's Brent Smith in the javelin, Shawn Frazier of Woods ; Cross in the shot and discus, Geoff Facer of Viewmont in the pole vault, David Daniels of Davis in the high jump, Bountiful's speedy Mike Cutler in both the 100 and 200 meters. Matt Roat of Woods Cross in the 1600 and 800 plus on the 1600 relay team; Steve Barnes of Viewmont, View-mont, along with teammate Ryan Anderson, in the 3200 meters, and Dan Whiting of Davis in the hurdles. hur-dles. Other top boys include Shannon Jenkins and Jerry Martineau of Viewmont in the pole vault, Jared Blauer and Brian Hillman of Viewmont View-mont in the high jump, Joey Covey of Bountiful in the springs and hurdles, hur-dles, Bill Crowther of Viewmont in the 400 meters and medley relays, plus Scott Winerman of Viemwont in the long jump, Dave Funk of Bountiful in the pole vault, Mark Johansen of Viewmont in the distance dis-tance races, Tyler Gee of Bountiful in the sprints, and Jim Bender of Viewmont in the sprints. The Viewmont medley relay team of Ryan Young, Lance Harrison, Harri-son, Crowther and Ryan Anderson won the region title, and Bountiful's Bounti-ful's 1600 relay team and 100 relay team is to be contented with. Davis and Viewmont would appear to have the top-scoring local contingents contin-gents going to Weber State. Among the ladies Viewmont has the strongest squad, with good overall depth, though the best chance of state champions appear to come from Woods Cross, Bountiful Boun-tiful and Davis. Woods Cross sophomore Carolyn Knight has been awesome thus far in the 400 meters, and also won the region long jump title. Lisa Schryver of Davis is an all-around ; threat in the long jump, 100 and 200 meters. Other top local long jumpers jum-pers who've qualified are View-. mont's Becky Leatham and; Andrea Bunderson, and Bounti-)' ful's Chan tall Miner. The javelin shows Bountiful's Lori Stacey as top entry, with Kim Soelberg and Robin Mitchell of Viewmont also in the loop. The shot put features Bountiful sophomore sopho-more Stephanie Reading, who also should contend in the discus. Mar-ci Mar-ci Heaps of Woods Cross and Soelberg Soel-berg are also going in the shot, and Stacey joins the state field in discus. Miner and Leatham are top locals loc-als in the high jump, along with.: Stacey Field of Davis. Schryver and Knight will join with Anna Gustafson of Woods Cross for a powerful trio in the 200, Tiffany Southwick of Bountiful is excellent in the 100 and 200, and Field will be joined in the hurdles by Heidi Olsen of Bountiful and Car-lynn Car-lynn Bloomfield of Viewmont. Distance events will include two-time region champ Ami Ses-; : sions of Woods Cross, along with Viewmont's Jennifer Johansen and Stephanie Spendlove. The Viewmont View-mont 400 relay team of Jenni Squire, Becky Lund, Brooke Richardson and Bunderson is the top local entry, with Bountiful's medley relay team of Olsen, Amy Wall, Southwick and Kim Johnson the region champs. Action begins at 10 a.m. both days in Wildcat Statium. |
