Show A TERRIBLE EXAMPLE. Very frequently the public are informed j that the Confederacy is again in the sad-1 die. "This information is generally volunteered volun-teered and vouched for by the " Ropubli- j cans. That it is true no one doubts save j the wicked Democrats and the Confeder- j ates themselves. Very recently the j Cincinnati Commercial-Gazette and the j Chicago Heruld had a slight dispute in ! regard to the purpose for which Fort Pil-1 lam Chalmers is introduced into the Ohio" j campaign or. the Republican side. The I Herald of the 21st inst., concerning the j matter, says: i "Mr. Halstead wants the Herald to under- j stand that Fort Pillow Chalmers appears in the Ohio campaign on the Republican side j only to show to the people of the North how j the colored vote is suppressed at the South. ; The Herald wants Mr. Halstead to under- ; Btand that nobody ever suppressed the col- j ored vote as Chalmers did. at Fort Pillow, ; when he refused to give quarter. Evervbody i up here likes a good Republican, but "Chal- mere is too rich for Chicago's blood." There was a master stroke, of policy j in getting Chalmers to stnmp.Ohio for the ; 5 Republicans and to help sustain the gore and glory of the "bloody shirt" plank. Chalmers will serve most excellently well as a "terrible' example" in this -business of suppressing the colored vote at the South, and other outrages of a similar na1 turc. - |
