Show j The "Gencsta's" Stormy Cruise. j New Yohk, September 24. The English cutter "Genesta" yesterday won the Bren-ton's Bren-ton's Reef challenge cup, by beating the American schooner "Dauntless" in the 300-mile 300-mile race from Sandy Hook " light-ship to Brent'on's Reef lightship and return. Time, 48 hours, 7 minutes, 60 seconds. The outward out-ward run was entirely uneventful, with light winds, the "Genesta" literally RUNNING A WAT FB01I HEB AMERICAN COMPETITOR, COM-PETITOR, Which was a mere speck on the horizon Tuesday morning, the race having been started at 5 o'clock Monday evening. There was a heavy rain on the way up the coast. Tho "Genesta" rounded Brenton's Reef lightship, having accomplished half of the journey at 9:39 Tuesday night, and started on the return in a heavy fog at 11:30. When twenty miles on the homeward journey, the "Dauntless" wa9 sighted, and was therefore forty miles behind. A stiff gale had in the meantime sprung up, and the "Duuntless" had lost the head of her main topsail. About midnight A VERITABLE CYCLONE 8ET IN, - And the Englishman had all the wind he wanted. One after another he had to take in sail. At 6:50 a. m. she stood about on the starboard tack, midway batween Montauk Point and the Shinnecock lighthouse. The sea was running high and the greater part of the time the cutter was all under water, save her weather quarter, to which the crew clung. Every time she shipped a wave her main sheet was wet half-way up to the gaff, and when she plunged headlong it was thought each moment would be her last. Sir Richard Sutton and his guests prudently prudent-ly remained below, and the crew appeared almost worn out with cold and fatigue. At 11:40 Fire Island light was abeam, and th6 SEAS APPARENTLY ROLLING MOUNTAINS HtOH. The outter took in hsr staysail at 12 o'clock and reefed it. The gale had increased in severity so much that one of the "Genesta's" crew waa flung to the deck and knocked unconscious, un-conscious, and remained in this condition some hours. Another sailor was washed partially overboard, but caught in time to save his life, for had he gone into the trough of the sea he would certainly have been drowned. He escaped with a broken ankle. Another had his head cut open by being struck with an iron ring, and still another had one of his fingers broken. At 2:30 the "Genesta" was close reefed, and an hour later almost opposite Long Beach, SHE WAS STILL PLUNGING FRIGHTFULLY. At 4:45 she was abreast of the Rockaway hotel, and then headed for Sandy Hook lightship, which she rounded at 5:19.40. Her actual time was 48:07.05; her official time, 48:19.40. The "Dauntless" was not seen after she was discerned off Block Island, and it is supposed she gave up the race and entered Newport in consequence of the storm which was raging. The "Genesta" was admirably handled throughout the race, and has proved her virtues in a heavy sea. |
