Show OXLY GUILTY OF ASSAULT. Anderson, the IViuth Ward Shoemaker, Shoe-maker, Escapes the More Serious Seri-ous Charge. The case of the People of Utah vs. William Anderson, on trial for an assault upon little Mary "Williams with intent to commit rape, was continued yesterday and resumed this morning, with jurors, attorneys and witnesses present. Jacob Birkenshaw, George Anderson, F. G. Lyngberg and C. M. Bergstrom were examined and adduced pretty much the same evidence as given by the preceding pre-ceding witnesses to the effect that the little ten-year-old girl went to Anderson's shoe shop on the 10th of last September Septem-ber to get a pair of repaired shoes, and while there the defendant pulled her onto his lap and kissed and caressed her, when she began crying, broke away from him and ran home. The child's parents learned of Anderson's treatment of their little girl, and bad him arrested for assault with intent to commit rape. The evidence in the case was argued by the counsel, and the court charged the jury, who returned shortly afterward with a verdict of guilty of assault, and recommended Anderson to the mercy of the Court. Sentence is set for Monday, November 10th. |
