Show I A NEW COMMENTARY. J IThe editor of the Tribune is engaged in writing a commentary upon the Lord's Prayer, and gave the public some advance sheets this morning. lie says: j The Lord's Prayer is made to" read in Enclish: "Lead .us. not into temptation,", which does not mean to intimate that the Lord has any intention of doing such a thing; bnt that it ia merely another way of saying: "Do not permit us to enter into temptation?' This interpretation of the Lord's Prayer is entirely new to us as we had always supposed that the Lord would lead us into temptation unless He were beseeched not to. This also is very good : So, were one to say that the editor of the Democrat seems to be the most stupid man that the Lord ever made, it would not mean that the Lord had been really guilty of mai-; mai-; ing him, but merely that he permitted him I i to be born. j i Were one to so speak one would break I the commandment, "Thou 6halt not lie." These are all very good commentaries, but the following exegesis is truly wonderful: won-derful: "When we say the Lord does a thing, we mean that He permitted it to be done. Now, we honestly thought when you said that the Lord permitted a thing to be done that you meant that you permitted per-mitted the Lord to permit a thing to be I ; . done. After your humble apology we I forgive you. |
