The strike is of greater extent than was at ": first I known, and affects nearlv everv indnatrv in the city. Fully fifteen hundred Enights of Labor went out yesterday afternoon along the wharves in the' cotton presses and freight houses. The order to strike cameC from two sources the State-Executive Committee 6f the Knights of Labor and the vTradea' Assembly As-sembly of ahrestonr Th&'order from" tiie Trades' Assembly reached the workmen not members of the Knights of Labor, leaving them free to comply- with the order or to ignore it, as they choose. The order from the Knights of Labor extended the entire length of the Gulf, Colorado & Santa Fe railroad, from Galveston to Fort Worth, including in-cluding the men employed on that road at Houston. The movement of trains is not delayed as yet,, as the striking workmen on the Santa Fe are chiefly . freight handlers and switchmen. Being unable to obtain possession of the Mallory Company's wharves here, the Knights of Labor determined to "boycott" all companies doing business with Mallory's. in no way connected with the steam-ship lines. Over twelve large foreign steamers now lying in port were deserted by screw-men. screw-men. No cotton can be unloaded until the strike is ended. Strikers congregated in large numbers in the streets last night. Order prevailed, but there are signs porten-tious porten-tious of trouble. The Typographical Union held a meeting last night and decided not to observe the order from the Trades' Assembly . to strike. Their stated grounds for this action are based on the fact that the original striking longshoremen were jiot members of the Knights of Labor when they struck. All labor organizations here are holding meetings. : P. H. Golden, Master Workman . of the Texas Knights of Labor, says unless the Mallory Company complies with the request re-quest to give Knights of Labor equal representation repre-sentation on their wharves here, a general strike throughout Texas and Louisiana will be ordered. |
