Show ATTEMPTED SUICIDE. Henry Swabe, from Salt Lake, Shoots Himself at San Francisco. Last night, at about half-past 8 o'clock, says the San Francisco Alta-California of the 12th inst., Henry Schwabe, a native of Germany, attempted to commit suicide at the Russ House. He retired to his room at the hour indicated, and without undressing, shot himself through the breast. He then rang the bell for assist-snce. assist-snce. Dr. McNutt was at once summoned, sum-moned, and upon examination found that the bullet, which had been fired J from a Smith & Wesson revolver, re-volver, had passed clear through Schwabe's left lung, inflicting a very serious seri-ous but not necessarily fatal wound. Acquaintances Ac-quaintances of the wounded man were notified of his condition, and soon arrived at the hotel. From all that could be gathered relative to his affairs last night, it seems that Schwabe was employed some ten or twelve years ago as a bookkeeper book-keeper for a jewelry firm in this city, and was a heavy defaulter. It is stated that he misappropriated funds to the amount Of nearlv $8.0t)0. Schwabp is nnirl in ho nf excellent family connection, and his parents still live in Germany. He recently came from Salt Lake, and registered at the Russ House on the 9th instant. He has also been drinking rather heavily.and was not long since divorced from his wife. Whether or not his present attempt to' end his life was due to pecuniary difficulties diffi-culties or a nervous system impaired by dissipation is somewhat uncertain. Schwabe attempted suicide ten years ago, when his defalcations were discovered, and immediately upon recovering,started in again to rob his employer. The friends of the wounded man are not at all hopeful hope-ful of his recovery, although the attending attend-ing physician held out some hope of the man's pulling through all right. |
