Show An Indian Marriage. A very interesting and romantic courtship court-ship has been carried on in the puyallup Indian reservation lately, says the Tacoma (Washing Territory) News. The participants are Joe G. Walker, an Indian laborer, and Miss Clara J. Charley, aged 14 years, who has been attending school there. Last week Mr. Eells, agent at the reservation, received a letter from Joe, who was at Puyallup. He stated that he wanted to marry Clara sure, and asked the agent to assist him in getting her. "Clara wants me," he wrote, "and I must have her." The agent consulted Clara on the subject. She declared that she was not well acquainted with Joe, and had only spoken to him once. Then the intended groom was sent for and the agent arrayed the loving couple before htm, as would a minister who was about to perform the marriage ceremony. "Do you love this man, and are you willing to marry him," he asked of Clara. "I do." The same question was put to Joe, and elicited the same response. "Well, join hands," replied the agent, "and consider yourselves engaged for three months. At the end of that time you may marry." This is in accordance with the rule in force on the reservation that all Indians marrying must be engaged at least three months before the ceremony is performed. |
