As announced in last night's Democrat, William Cowan was arrested yesterday afternoon for unlawful cohabitation. Deputy Sprague conducted the aged progenitor pro-genitor to the office of Commissioner McKay Mc-Kay for preliminary examination. Mr. Cowan is a clerk at Teasdel's, and resides with his wives at . 457 S. Main street, in the Eighth ward. The complaint com-plaint charges the. obedient brother of the Mormon church with unlawfully living liv-ing with Mary Cowan and Jane Stoner Cowan as his wives in the marriage relation. re-lation. The polygamous wife, Jane Stoner, was called to the witness stand and stated that she knew the defendant and considered consid-ered Cowan her husband. His first wife. Mary, has four children and I have eight. Defendant has passed all his- time with me for the last Beven years. Both families fam-ilies are on good terms and living in separate sep-arate apartments, but adjoining each other. Mr. Cowan treats us both alike, save that he don't piss any nights with Mary. Mrs. Jane Cowan, a daughter-in-law, said she had seen defendant eat and stop at both houses. Last saw defendant at Mary's in December, when he was with the bishop and elders who were adminis-terins adminis-terins to her for an miurv received. Joseph Cowan, a son, said he knew Mary Cowan, but not the relation she bore tohim. - She was his father's wife. Mr. Cowan, the defendant, desired to state that he treated both his wives alike, save in the holding-out process. He had abandoned the marriage relationship with Mary seven years ago. Commissioner Commis-sioner McKay continued the case until this morning, in view of all the witnesses being subpoenaed before the Grand Jury. Mr. Cowan was allowed to go on his own recognizance, which leaves room for the inference that the Court considered the case a rather unimportant one from the evidence that had been adduced. This morning the witnesses in the case appeared ap-peared before the Grand Jury, and just what shape the affair is now in remains to be learned. |
