Show 'V' - : . V. RECEPTION AT FORT DOUGLAS. The Federal Officials Tendered the Honors by the Gallant Sixth. At a little past 1 o'clock this afternoon a long file of Federal officials emerged from the Walker House and took seats in the five ambulances which were in waiting, wait-ing, some of which, by the way, had the appearance of not having been used since General Johnson's arrival here.. The ambulances were filled with Governor Murray, Secretary Thomas, Marshal Ireland, Ire-land, Commissioner Paddock, Judge Zane, Clerk J. S. Zane, Deputy Clerk McMillan, General Dement, Postmaster Lynch, Postmaster-elect Browe, Judge O. W. Powers, Prosecuting Attorney Bier-, bower, of Ogden, etc., etc., and were driven to the Fort at as good a rate of speed as the condition of the roads and the size of the freight permitted. The battery of the Fifth Artillery was drawn up as the Governor and party approached ap-proached the Fort and received the officials offi-cials with a salute of seventeen guns, j The guests were conducted to Recreation Hall, where a formal reception by the officers of the Fort was extended, the latter being in full uniform, after which a concert, of eight select pieces, was rendered ren-dered by the. Sixth Infantry Band, refreshments re-freshments being served in the interims. It was expected that a number of speeches "would be made by General Mc-Cook, Mc-Cook, Governor Murray and others, but we were unable to obtain any report of them before going to press. Prosecuting Attorney Dickson and Com-' missioner McKay went to the Fort laterv in the afternoon in a private conveyance, having been -detained on ..business from accompanying the party." There were no ladies Invited, and the. nature of the exercises ex-ercises were therefore different from what some had expected.- ' Every effort had been put forth by General McCookandthe officers at the Fort to make the affair an enjoyable one, and the party went away from the city in the right kind of. a mood to have it such. |
