Show The Utah Commission. The severe attack which Senator Van Wyck made upon the Utah Commission asio its extravagance, uselessness, etc., in the Senate Wednesday, was replied to by Commissioner Paddock yesterday, and the Commissioner's telegram was read before the Senate for the particular benefit bene-fit of the Senator from Nebraska. The dispatch denied that there were six clerks .employed by , the Commission here, and stated that " two or possibly three" was the; maximum number, and that at present one clerk constituted the entire force.. The "two or possibly three" expression was turned by Van Wyck into the finest kind of material for a joke, and the Senator made the best of it. He said in addressing the Senate as to the contents con-tents of the telegram : "Perhaps if they employed another clerk they could probably proba-bly find out exactly how many clerks they had." The remark produced "great laughter," so the press dispatches state. |
