Show A Negro masher's Bad Break.. New Obleans, January 31. The Times-Democrat's Times-Democrat's Vicksburg special says: In response re-sponse to telegrams from Mayorsville for assistance, Captain Searles with twenty-two men left here at 2 a. m. and arrived at j Mayorsville at 10 o'clock, when the oause for j this requisition for troops was ascertained to be the apprehension that certain colored citizens cit-izens in that vicinity would seek to avenge the death of Ebenezer Fowler, a well-known negro barkeeper, on Saturday evening by enraged en-raged citizens of that place. Fowler, who was a married man about 45 years old, and rather ungainly in appearance, pushed his attentions upon white women whenever he could make it convenient to do so. On Saturday he wrote and delivered a note to a married woman whose hnsband was absent, making indecent proposals, and the lady delivered the note to her husband on his return. A meeting of citizens was called and a proposition made to tar and feather him, but it was decided to confront him with the lady herself , and Fowler was arrested. He made an effort to wrest a pistol pis-tol from the hands of one of hi3 guards, when the weapon was discharged, the bail J'ust missing the Mayor and burning his land badly. This inflamed the crowd, who without mercy riddled him with bullets. The exoitement has now abated, aud no further apprehension of trouble exists. |
