Show I I MR. DEMENT'S CONFIRMATION. A Washington dispatch received last night brought the astonishing news that the Senate yesterday, by a vote of 25 to 22, confirmed the nomination of Mr. De- , . J ment to be Surveyor-General for Utah. If "P to last night, there was a man in the community who entertained the idea that favorable action would be taken by t the Senate in Mr. Dement's case, that ;; man kept his ideas strictly to himself. !! : No wonder, then, that the news should ' i'. this morning fall upon the entire ; J, community with much the same effect as ,! would the news that all the inmates of I. the penitentiary had dug their way out ' :'; through the adobe walls of that institu- j j tion and escaped under cover of night. ! ' The Democrat do3s not think that Mr. 'i- Dement is a fit and proper person to ! ' represent the Government in the office to which he has been assigned. Therea-; Therea-; sons for that befief have been set forth in these columns on divers occasions, and it I : is unnecessary to repeat them at this time. The fact, however, that Mr. De-Si. De-Si. ment's confirmation is owing to an ap-j ap-j peal made to his brother Senators by Mr. ; , Logan, confirms the truth of what the Democrat has heretofore stated, to-wit : ;"; . y- That Logan, was anxious to secure his j; confirmation to pay off the debt he owed j Dement for work performed by the latter in his (Logan's) behalf during the fight I for the Illinois Senatorship. He must in- ' deed be a good Democrat who would I :; place Senator Logan under such obliga- j ' tions to him. J j The most satisfactory thing about the dispatch alluded to is the last paragraph, i in which it is stated that "the result was ' due to Teller's absence, and a reconsideration reconsider-ation was entered and it will come up again." With Teller's vote against con-i con-i firmation, and the flopping vote of the Senator who moved for a reconsidera-' reconsidera-' ' ; tion, the prospects are that the office of I Surveyor-General for this Territory may ' yet be filled by a Democrat who knows j enough to go indoors when it rains. |
