Dement was at first rejected by a viva voce vote, when Logan made a vigorous personal appeal, saying he had promised the President Presi-dent to see him confirmed if appointed, and begged his friends to help him keep his pledge. He stated that Dement was a good man, but ingenuous, and was entbapped by oobbespondents Unfriendly to him. Plumb intimated that Logan's obligation was from Dement acting as a spy for Logan in the Senatorial fight at Springfield. Walthall opposed the confirmation, and said the committee had satisfactory evidence f ot its position, etc. The Delaware Senators supported Dement. The Republicans voting for Dement were Logan, Sawyer, Cameron, Sabin, and Mitchell Mitch-ell of Oregon. The result was due to Teller's absence, and a reconsideration was entered and it will come up again. |
