Show A BRIDGE OF SIGHS. Fearful Accident, by Which Many Are Plunged into the River of Death. East Saginaw, Michigan, Oct. 28. This evening a fire broke out on the tug "McDonald," "McDon-ald," at the dock, about 100 feet south of the Genessee avenue bridge, upon which a large number of people had congregated. Suddenly Sud-denly a piece of the sidewalk on the bridge, five feet wide and forty-five feet long, gave way witn a crash, precipitating sixty people into the river, fifteen to eighteen feet deep, with a strong current. The night was cloudy and dark, and miraculously a great number were saved. Many were badly bruised. The river is now being dragged, and the body of Sidney Fallon, aged 8, has been brought up. It is thought that several perished, as twelve or thirteen arc missing. James Twaits was rescued, but is badly hurt. John Gothenburg Gothen-burg was injured about the legs. George A. Irwin was slightly injured. E. D. Cowles, managing editor of the Courier, was standing on the extreme farther far-ther point of the bridge when it went down. He could not swim a stroke and was dragged by the struggling people to the bottom of the river twice, but got clear, and drifting down, clung to a spile until rescued, sustain- Owing to the large number of persons on the bridge, the darkness and the fact that the people picked up along the river were hurried to their homes, it is impossible to tell to-night how many were drowned. Prosecuting Attorney Emeriok was reported missing, but has turned up safe. The current cur-rent is very swift, and it is thought some bodies may have drifted some distance down the stream. |
