Show Hauling Down the Flag WASHINGTON Oct 12 Advices were received re-ceived at the Department of State this morning corroborating the published report of hauling down the American flag on the schooner Mary Ann Grimes at Shelbourne by Captain Quiggley of the Canadian I cruiser Terror The action of th captain of the Grimes in tunning up the colors while the vessel was in the custody of the Canadian officers is deprecated at the Department De-partment I will be likely to needlessly complicate the Department in its effort to reach a satisfactory settlement of the fisheries fisher-ies question It appears that when the United States cutter Corwin seized tho British sealing seal-ing vessels in Alaskan waters the first official act of the captain was to haul down the British colors The groundfor taking such action was found in the claimthat until the seized vessel is released she is technically in the possession of the government making the seizure This last incident is not regarded re-garded at the State Department as likely to cause any serious trouble and may be passed over without further notice |
