Show POLICE COURT The List of Petty Offenders Before Judge Pyper Peter Knox was yesterday fined 5 for drunkenness Eph Kelly was today fined 25 for drunkenness The defendant was arrested ar-rested late last night and was too drunk this morning to plead anything but guilty Wm Maynes was last night hauled in for drunkenness and today at 10 a m forfeited 5 George Elliot was to be tried this morning morn-ing for stealing a ride from Ogden to Salt Lake City but fearing something he took advantage of the Courts leniency and did not appear Samuel Newton next came up to answer an-swer to a charge of disturbing the peace and he pleaded not guilty The witnesses wit-nesses for the prosecution whose testimony was heard were Mrs Winburg Mr Jones Sarah Win burg and Minnie Winburg The latter testifies that she was married lo the defendant de-fendant about thirteen years ago that four years ago she had obtained a divorce and that ever since she had lived I in perfect terror lest the brute should carry out some of his horrible threat and kill her The witness also stated that she had to work hard even day in the week to support her children only to be abused and cursed on Sunday by the rascal who was once her husband Last Sunday the defendant entered her house with a stranger who introduced himself as Jones Both were drunk and Newton at once began using the vilest language and calling her the filthiest names that one having the form of man is capable of While some of the language was being repeated to the court the defendant had he possessed one spark of manhood would have blushed for shame but he is too much of the brute to have any such feelings He scoffed laughed and tried to make light of the testimony during the whole trial His lawyer became sick of the case and left the room and the defendant then feeling his helplessness helpless-ness pleaded guilty to all During the final remarks of the prosecuting prose-cuting attorney Newton became too combative to contain himself and was thrown from the room and allowed to return only to hear his sentence which was 200 or 200 days for disturbance and 100 or 100 days for contempt of court Newton being unable to pay the fine will now rest in the city jail for 300 days When he gets out a close watch should be kept over him to see that he does not carry out his horrible threats toward his divorced wife and her family |
