Show I A REMARKABLE DOCUMENT The Shelter of ITlr Cleveland on the FisJilcrics Question TOBONTO April 12The Globe of yesterday yester-day says lhe letter of President Cleveland Cleve-land to tho President of tho Fishery Union of Gloucester Massachusetts is a remarkable remarka-ble and important document It is not such a letter as the Americans interested in the fisheries desired to receive from the President but the letter was evidently intended in-tended as a warning to the Canadians also While we desire that the right of Canada be firmly and effectively asserted and maintained main-tained wo hope tho American fishermen will not be refused any privileges to which they are entitled and that they will never experience ex-perience unjust or unfriendly treatment treat-ment from those employed in the protection pro-tection of our rights It would be folly however to put out of sight the fact that many in the United States including in-cluding apparently the President himself and tho members of his Cabinet assert that the fishermen of the United States have rights in their own waters which we believe they have not under tho terms of the treaty now in force and that there are privileges to which they are entitled by the opinion of I the President to which we say they have no right whatever From this misunderstanding if wo assert what we believe to be our rights greater misunderstandings may arise This letter although studiously moderate in tone intimates plainly what may follow The position is to say the least exceedingly serious |
