Show DOES THE DEMOCRACY ENDORSE CAINES NOMINATION John T Caine is again the Mormon nominee for Delegate to Congress He is the peoples choicethat is he is the choice of the First Presidency which for politics as well as all other purposes constitutes the people of Utah He is I running upon the Peoples Ticket He is moreover and to the shame of the Democracy of Utah be it said the member mem-ber of the Democratic Congressional Committee for this Territory While it 5 is true that our local Democracy had no hand in his appointment and are unanimously unan-imously i indignant that they should be so outrageously misrepresented upon the Committee no concerted action has been taken to express such indignation in-dignation or to protest against his biing continued in that position Such supineness on their part will naturally nat-urally create the impression abroad that he is there with their consent and approval J ap-proval Can they afford this and cant can-t rest easily under such a monstrous imputation i The DEMOCJUT iH i grievously mistaken in their temper and spirit if i such is the fact Indeed we know to the ruiiirary irutii personal expression ui many prominent Democrats and yet no steps have been taken to officially repudiate repu-diate the man or denounce the fraud by which lie foisted himself upon the committee com-mittee at Washington We have a Territorial Ter-ritorial Democratic Committee composed of gentlemen each of whom we are more than confident would if personally questioned express his condemnation of the action which so grossly raisrepre sonts the sentiments and position of the Democratic party of the Territory still nothing has been done to give official expression ex-pression to this feeling A meeting of the Territorial Committee should be called without delay and the best means devised to place the party right in the eyes of the people abroad by giving the true expression of its views and position upon this matter through its agents or accredited representatives As it stands at present to all outward appearances the Mormon candidate stands at least tacitly endorsed by the Democracy of Utah for Delegate to Congress His campaign cam-paign will be conducted ostensibly under the auspices of the National Conjjres sional Committee of which he is a mem ner lie win 01 he elected and course t > e eiecieu anu unless some action is taken will return re-turn to AVashington next winter and hack his claims to membership In the Democratic party with the fact that he made his campaign as a member of the National Committee and with at least the tacit concurrence of I he party in his Territory It would be shameful and even criminal to permit this to be clone and the DEMOCRAT echoes the sentiment of Utahs Democracy in urging upon the Territorial Committee the imperative importance of taking such steps as will relieve the t party from the odium attaching to it through the ill I advised and mistaken action of the Con HIeRHional Committee |
