Show UNDER IRON WHEELS I William Openshaw a BrAkeman on I the Utah k Nerada Read Meet l a SHdden Death Struck in the Back by a Piece of Lumber and Precipitated to the Track The Whole Train of Cars Passes Over Him and Leaves His Body in a Jelly The report of another fatal accident on the Utah Nevada road was circulated on the streets this morning and from the gentlemanly station agent of the road a DEMOCRAT reporter learned the following particulars The victim was William Openshaw a brakeman on the train that left this city at 815 this morning When about four miles out Openshaw who was on the top of a box car noticed a piece of lumber lum-ber sliding from a flat car which was running run-ning between his car and the engine Tho engineer whistled to him to come don n and fix the boards and he was just climbing down the ladder at the end of the box car when the end of the board nearest the engine slid off and stuck into the ground while the other end crushed through Openshaws body against the box car He dropped lifeless between the cars and the entire train passed over him There were two freights and one coach and after the wheels of these had run over him tho body was left in A HORRIBLE MASS The train was stopped and run back to the point where the accident occurred The bOdy was picked up and the train backed to the city again The remains were then taken to the undertaking establishment of Joseph Win Taylor where the coroner soon arrived The inquest developed the facts of the the accident just as given above The engineer and fireman say that he must have been instantly killed by the board as it stuck two feet into the ground and came against him with fearful force From tho appearance of the body it would seem that the board crushed through the spinal column which would of course causo instant death and knocked a fearful hole CLEAR THHOUaH TIlE BODY The car wheels did the rest of the horrible hor-rible work twisting the limbs into every conceivable shape and crushing the flesh about them cleaving open the skull and letting tho contents out mashing the face beyond recognition breaking almost every bone and converting convert-ing every inch of flesh into such an ugly bloody mass that it could hardly be told at which end were the feet and which end the head In fact it was probably one of the most repulsive objects that ever came from what was but a moment before the fair form of a human being The accident was altogether an unexpected unex-pected one and could hardly have been guarded against in any way It is customary cus-tomary to fasten the lumber on the cars but as there was so small a load this was not considered necessary There were about twenty passengers in the coach all of whom were horrified at the spectacle shown them WILLIAM OPENSUAW Was young man of about 2 2 years of age He has been in the employ of tho Utah Nevada road for about nine years and in that time his conduct has been such that all the boys have a good word for him now and ho will go to his grave with a place in the heart of every man who knew him Ho had boon married but about a year and was the happy father of an infant child His father and mother Job and Nancy Openshaw live in tha Sixteenth Six-teenth ward near his late residence and they will share the sympathy which all must extend to the sorrow stricken young wife The funeral will take place from the Sixteenth ward meetinghouse tomorrow morning at an hour hereafter to be decided de-cided upon |
