Show TilE DRY BENCH It appears to us that the demand for more water just made by the dry benchers bench-ers is too soon enouch The dry bench is of the most radical suburban character and cannot reasonably expect to share in all of the benefits accruing to strictly city localities When the dry bench was settled set-tled it was with the distinct understanding under-standing all around that the supply of water from the city must necessarily be of the most limited character Nevertheless Never-theless in answer to persistent and reiterated requests the city last winter established ti line of outlying hydrants by means of which the dry bench settlers were amply supplied with water for culinary and drinking purposes This line of hydrants was all the dry benchers wanted It was the acme of their desires It was the only moisture craved by the burning ambition of the dry bencher Scarcely however are these hydrants in working order before the City Council is asked to still further extend the city water system so as to place water in the dwelling houses of the dry bench thus giving that outlying suburb all of the water advantages of the most central city locality The city water supply is none too plentiful for the use of the city proper Aside from this is the important consideration consider-ation of expense for fully threefourths of the cost of this new extension would have to be borne by the city necessitating necessitat-ing a special city tax Therefore while THE DEMOCRAT is in favor of any and everything looking toward the material welfare progress and prosperity of the city wo must say that under all of the circumstances the new request of the dry benchers savors of entirely too much freshness The dry bench should come to tho city The city can not be expected to go to the dry bench |
