Show Peer Leadership Council Aids Youth and Families with Promise Stacie Peart Campus Editor The Thayne Centers Center's Peer Leadership Council invited families and children from the Youth and Families with Promise Program and the YES Program to the Winter Festival The 2nd Annual Winter Festival was held at atthe atthe atthe the Redwood Campus' Campus Student Events Center on Friday Dec 3 3 Families enjoyed games food crafts and fun Parents and youth arrived at at pm p.m. The PLC and others helping with the festival greeted everyone as they took seats around the various craft and activity stations in the Student Event Center PLC members took pictures of the families when they put their faces through a cardboard cardboard cardboard card card- board scene featuring a rein rein- deer and a cotton ball snow snow- man Craft stations included projects projects projects pro pro- like cookie decorating while the game stations included family games such as bingo Children were visited visited visited visit visit- ed by Santa Claus Glaus The and the YES program program program pro pro- gram along with the PLC and the Student Life and Leadership decorated the Student Center with two Christmas trees complete with wrapped presents under under- neath They also hung paper snowflakes from the ceiling and provided small Christmas trees as table centerpieces The families enjoyed the pizza fruit and vegetables provided Holiday music played in the background The Youth and Families See Youth continued on page 7 Youth continued from front with Promise Program and the YES Program both help find mentors for at- at risk youth They plan activities every month for forthe forthe forthe the youth and their families families families lies called Family Night Out These nights are to encourage parental involvement in a childs child's life According to their web web- site YIP is designed to address youth problems through early intervention with risk at-risk youth ages 14 10 and their families The two-level two mentoring program recruits young adult and grand mentors to reduce and prevent delinquent delinquent delinquent delin delin- quent behavior The programs really need mentors especially male mentors to help at- at risk youth in Utah Those interested need to commit to at least nine months and will meet with the child once a week mission is to improve academic performance performance performance per per- increase interpersonal competence competence competence compe compe- tence and strengthen family bonds According to the the youth involved in Utah's Youth and Families with Promise mentoring program program program pro pro- gram reported significant significant cant changes happening after being involved in inthe inthe inthe the program for the 2000 1999 school year For more information call 1543 or visit http exten sion I F J.
