| Show Students Favor Semester System Over Quarter System 0 By Bob Denning There has been much talk in Utah lately about universities switching from the quarter system to the semester system There has also been a great deal of debate following following following follow follow- ing this controversy too The biggest question is will it end up saving the universities more money or end up costing them more According to most of the university officials it will end up costing more as much as 3 to 5 million dollars more Backers of the semester system disagree strongly not only saying it will save money money but will utilize facilities at the colleges as well California schools ironically changed to the quarter system to save money but eventually switched back More students seem to be in favor of the semester system no matter if it cost more feeling they can get more out of a semester than a quarter Mike Maes Macs a junior junio in architecture said I feel that the quarters are too rushed and you do donot donot donot not learn as much as you should I definitely like the semester better Private universities such as BYU and Westminster also feel the students will learn more using the semester system and feel it costs them less money Wm Rolfe Kerr Utah's commissioner commisSioner commissioner com com- missioner of higher education feels a trimester would best fit the needs of Utah's colleges saying facilities can be used better with a trimester plan There is a national trend in inthis inthis inthis this direction Dr Kerr feels there is no great savings in this process but there is some and nd there is one less registration process Universities and the State Board of Regents are putting figures together for the estimated cost of the switch |
