Show Centerville council raises garbage fee, approves soccer field By PAULA HUFF CENTERVILLE-A 2.2 percent rate increase in-crease for garbage pickup service was approved by the Centerville City Council Tuesday Tues-day in the regular meeting. When a new contract is signed with Olen Sheriff & Sons garbage pickup service, the rate will increase from $3. 18 to $3.25 per month per family in Centerville. Mr. Sheriff had asked the council for 4 to 5 percent increase. Escalating operating costs necessitated the increase, according to Mr. Sheriff. Although the council commended Mr. Sheriff Sher-iff for his "excellent service," they questioned him about a recent bid for garbage pickup he offered Farmington. According to City Manager David A. Hales, Farmington recently opened bids for a city garbage gar-bage collection service. At that time, Mr. Sheriff Sher-iff offered Farmington a bid price of $2.75 per month per family. Mr. Sheriff told the council he could offer Farmington a lower contract price because Farmington citizens do not have as much garbage gar-bage as Centerville citizens. Mr. Sheriff said he felt Centerville citizens took advantage of his garbage pickup service by putting out more garbage for pickup. In other business, the council discussed allowing North Salt Lake to join the South Davis Fire District. Some councilmen agreed that having North Salt Lake a district member would not benefit Centerville. South Davis Fire District Chairman Harry Gerlach told the council the district was initially initial-ly formed to make fire protection cheaper for South Davis citizens in unincorporated areas. Later incorporated areas were allowed to join the district, he said. Now the fire district is designed to benefit all South Davis cities interested in joining, he said. Business concerning North Salt Lake entering enter-ing the fire district was tabled for consideration at a later date. The council also approved a new soccer field at 700 East Park. The South Davis Soccer Association will pay for installation of permanent perma-nent goals and lines, according to Mr. Hale. The field is for soccer players 6 years old or younger. Council members also approved increasing the city's insurance liability coverage policy from $1 million to $5 million at a cost of $3,600. Money from the city's general fund will pay for the policy increase. Appointment of a new Planning & Zoning Commission member was also discussed at the meeting. Any Centerville citizen interested in being a commission member should notify Mayor Dean C. Argyle or the city manager before Sept. 2. A new member will be appointed in the Sept. 2 meeting. ps ; i,v ffflr- CUPPER JIM HASKETT AS IF THE tree could speak, the sign posted on its trunk tells the story. Perhaps a postscript should be added for dogs to "Beware." Apparently the sign was removed from park bench in Bountiful City Park and for lack of a better place to put the sign, they posted it on this tree trunk. |
