Show Special Services L L S Serves erves L Low ow Jr 7 J t Income Students f As Well As Handicapped One of the fastest growing departments on campus is Special Services This department serves not only disabled and handicapped students but ut also those who are low income or first generation college students One of the services they offer is instructional counseling for personal and school problems which helps the students to deal with on and off frustrations They are also in the process of taping books onto cassettes for the visually handicapped handicapped handicapped handi handi- capped students Those students eligible for the program that may need extra help in their classes can arrange for a tutor free of charge Special Services began in January 1985 with only twenty-five twenty students and by May 1985 they had students in the program Out of all the students applying for these theses these's s 's services es only five have been eligible The program has worked with f 17 X If t J 1 students Special Services employs one time full-time director one secretary 1 one full and three time part counselors an and J one project director Their goal is to make higher I education available to those who 1 might otherwise not have access to it and allow them to complete their education Mr Ron Wheadon project director K for Special S Services said that the percentage of blind students has has- increased this year He added that although the handicapped students have to deal with many problems at school he feels that single parents attending the the Tech have more They have so many agencies to work with its it's overwhelming Wheadon said The lack of coordination between these agencies he continued seems to be the problem For instance the only income a Pell grant recipient may have must be a nontaxable one or it counts against their grant and their food stamps Students who would like to help can take some time and read a book onto cassette for the visually handicapped or may want to attend the tutors workshop to be he held during winter quarter For F r more information contact the Special Service Program in T TB B or call Mr Wheadon said that it usually takes only one successful quarter for these students to keep going a and to make it J tt |
