T by Rob Kjar Managing Editor Keith Keit Heigert a general technology education co counselor elor has recently introduced d a new computer program called Discover which provides everything necessary for today's up-and-comer up from self- self assessment to resume writing More specifically the Discover program is designed for the adult student who is concerned with many fa factors tors as he faces an education The format tf nat is divided into six modules I under the headings Weathering Change Assessing Self and Identifying Alternatives Gathering Occupational Information Making Decisions Drafting Educational Plans and Getting a Job aJob The Th co computer puter asks a ks questions and the ther student simply replies as indicated The computer then gathers the data and gives a summary of facts to show just what that stud students student's nt s strengths ar are One advantage is that the student may obtain printouts of any assessment or resume assembled along the way A student who wants to learn more about a given occupation may find access to a World of Work map that displays a pie graph divided into 12 general regions of work From there one may take a a comprehensive look at a specific job Within the 12 regions are found 23 different job families and at the touch of a button lie hundreds of job titles and their descriptions Discovers Discover's Self-Assessment Self is unique in that it provides an an assessment of ones one's experiences as aswell aswell aswell well as present outlooks Drafting Educational Plans is made easier as the user finds access to hundreds of schools nationwide including pertinent facts about application pr procedures for any school Looking for a job Need a resume res 1 Discover has within its Getting a Job module a resume writing section that asks the student for factual information then aligns it in either of two resume formats The computer then can store the resume under the students student's Social Security number or orthe orthe orthe the student may erase rase the information if he chooses Heigert said that the program is js acquired by a grant for one year and it is expected that at Student Services ces will ill pi pick k up the cost after that Discover will win be useful for Career Development classes and Heigert hopes that it will eventually be worked into the curriculum Anyone wishing to work on the program for himself may contact contact- Keith Heigert in the Technology Buildings Building's counseling offices Workshops will also be conducted luct d as s the year progresses |
