grateful for these reports at 9 a m the priesthood session I 1 I 1 of stake quarterly conference opened and was well attended both in the priesthood session and the meeting of the older group the speakers for the Melchi sedek priesthood session were president jos B I 1 harris guy R hurst oscar P hurst all of whom reported good progress and activity in the various departments elias woodruff spoke on the subject service and activity Is the way to individual Indi viddal growth the priesthood met in separate session where work appropriate prop to that group was taken up the speakers were B frank redd charles sipe harry randall gilbert holyoak melvin dalton dallon keith johnson karl lyman and A jay redd A general conference session was held at 1030 the speak speakers era were bernard mecham a returned missionary president jos B harris charity L rowley stake president of the relief society counselor A jay redd wm R young C 0 stott eliab woodruff the theme of the meeting was the promptly at 2 and was very well attended pres dent joseph B harris presided the opening song high 7 upon a mountain I 1 top was presented by the choir and the tha congregation patria patriarch ach lB benjamin enjamin black offered the opening prayer of blessing the choir then appropriately and beautifully rendered the anthem invocation the entire musical program of unusually fine inspiring quality was ably conducted by brother R W mcallister brother wm ervin palmer then gave the annual report of the quorum of the seventies he said that while the average of attendance was only 35 per cent to 45 per cent about 90 per cent of the members were active in the projects bishop L frank redd was impressed with the magnitude and importance of church work I 1 bishop rogers commended the blanding ward for its good church achurch work especially mentioning the excellent response and progress of the priesthood he was emphatic in his requests that all should unite in the church liquor and tobacco campaign campag n mentioning that it is a terrible reflection upon the church when such a campaign is necessary in these matters the church wholeheartedly believes in the word of wisdom the testimony of the gospel does doe not come to one of unclean body or who falls fails to heed the admonitions of the word of wisdom liquor and tobacco poison both mind and body I 1 am glad to say that most young boys here are free from these evil injurious habits bishop mcconkie McCon kia reported on the moab ward saying that all activities were fully functioning he realizes his responsibilities responsibility es and sometimes feels that they are heavier than he can bear yet I 1 as he views the great work of other ward officers his burdens are made to feel much li lighter his testimony of the gospel in increases day by day elder oscar jameson presiding lder elder c of the la sal branch reiterated the importance of right living and the necessity of leading children aright especially by their living examples he ate concluded by saying that alcohol and tobacco actually retard spiritual progress and also creates lack of interest in church work president harris then read a list of those released from present church positions and thanks were I 1 voted them for faithful services I 1 rendered names were also al so voted VO t e d for new positions A list of new elders recommended by the bishop was also presented for acceptance cep tance later for ordination stake clerk frank redd presented names 3 of several church authorities ties who were all unanimously approved by vote of the congregation the san juan state officers names were also presented and approved brother leland redd mentioned that the church welfare program had about crowded tithing off the map yet tithing will always be with us while the welfare program meets the needs of an emergency which I 1 hope will soon pass away as economic maladjustment corrects itself tithing is a great blessing tithing really helps a man in his usual inimitable manner brother ernest adams then hen sang an inspiring solo 1 I am a pilgrim accompanied at the piano p I 1 ano 1 by sister mamie adams adam brother elias woodruff now took charge of the meeting ms eting lie he read a most interesting certificate of award issued by daniel C baird commander in chief of the boy scouts of america and his board of honor awards this certificate was presented to howard horward redd of monticello Mont kello in appreciation of his heroic saving of the life of meade allred from drowning in may of this year A gold medal aso also was arc presented anted to howard this is indeed an unusual honor bestowed for exceptional meritorious service as evidenced by the request of salt lake city and provo newspapers for photographs of this truly dramatic event the concluding prayer of appreciation and guidance was offered by brother karl lyman evening session this session of stake conference was under the auspices of the stake MIA MI A af after ter prayer all the returned missionaries sang ill go where you want me to go dear lord then a scripture reading by margaret john I 1 son then marian G nielson presented the MIA MI A theme then missionary tr acting was discussed by brother mecham of moab dee bayles gave the life of a missionary and the holding of street meetings the song oh my father was sung in four languages spanish by five men dutch ernest adams french claude robbins and american by the congregation loile loila bailey then talked on ways of getting the gospel unto every nation tongue and people by radio and otherwise he then sang a song he once sang over the radio pres A J redd discussed the improvement era as a missionary the congregation sang the closing song after which 1 D J black offered the
