Show southern groups to protest utah margarine taxes memphis tenn jan 11 sat SA j ting ling forth the claim that margarine taxes constitute a barrier to trade twelve leading cotton belt organizations joined the national cotton council in preparing protests against the utah tax to be submitted to the utah co commission tion at its meeting at salt lake city on january 13 the meeting of the com commission masslon slon i created by the state sale legislature at its 1939 session has been called to make a special Ial study of taxes on margarine in an effort to determine whether they are trade barriers present taxes include a five cent a pound levy on all margarine a 5 license fee on wholesalers and a 5 license fee on retailers organizations joining the cotton council in pro protesting lesting the taxes include the american cotton cooperative Ar AF the agricultural counsil council of arkansas the national cottonseed products association the arkansas commission on interstate cooperation gov hugh L white of M pi the national cotton association the mississippi delta council the texas statewide cotton committee the texas cotton gi anners association the texas commission on Inter cooperation the southern governors conference and the association of southern commissioners of agriculture the utah meeting is said to be the first held in any state to give exclusive attention to margarine taxation representatives of the utah commission attended both the council of state governments meeting at chicago last april and the western states conference on I 1 interstate cooperation at denver I 1 last fall where the national cotton council made strong representations against margarine trade barriers I 1 |
