Show blanding committee on beautification submits report the B landing blanding beautification I 1 committee consisting of mrs inez M stevens chairman mrs auie allie adams mrs freda hunt bud black alden N brewer and dr I 1 L M cohn secretary take this opportunity to give their final 1939 report of this contest the plan and purpose of the beautification contest was 1 1 cleaning and improvement of front and rear yards 2 painting or staining of homes with necessary repairs 3 improvement of streets sidewalks and highway weed eradication 4 improvement of quality and increase of quantity of our water supply so that health and all public and home improvements may be properly and continuously maintained this project was initiated and sponsored by the relief society i and also sponsored by the chamber of commerce the prize money was equally contributed by the ward the relief society and the chamber of commerce the results accomplished byth by this is beautification project compensated all who so faithfully contributed their time and effort to its success A complete canvass of all residents was made by allie adams bud black inez M stevens hilda palmer nellie harvey and alden N brewer the promotion of this plan created great interest in in home and ground improvements in at least the properties of the 50 contestants who were each assessed a entry fee trees shrubs flowers and lawns were extensively planted and many homes were improved it was convincingly proven that with a little persistent effort small expense and cooperation an entire community can be considerably modernized thus increasing health and comfort enhancing property values and creating an individual as well as community pride in home and town appearances t the he true secret of progress the prizes were awarded on the basis of who showed the greatest improvement in home exteriors and yards during the contest period april 1 to september 1 1939 the contest judges were alden N brewer ewer ethel L thompson and dr I 1 M cohn in many instances instance the judges found it quite difficult to arrive at a decision because several contestants showed almost equal improvement photographs of all contestants homes were taken prizes were finally awarded as follows prize florence galbraith 1000 10 iDO 2nd and prize cory perkins 3rd ard prize rebekah palmer honorable mention M F lyman hattie barton robert dodge harris Shurn shumway way annie carol J D rogers sr irene H redd hyrum stevens dee bayles myrtle redd hattie hawkins parley hurst and henry black |
