Show HONOR OUR PIONEERS we all like to talk about the heroism and fine accomplishments ments of the pioneers who settled this part of the country under seemingly insurmountable difficulties we herald them as heroes and martyrs and all that sort of thing we have such societies as the daughters of the pioneers to preserve their names and traditions all of which is proper and fitting we are all very sorry for their sufferings and proud of their accomplishments and when they die we meet for an hour or two and extol their deeds high ideals and fortitude yet words are empty when it comes to depicting the difficulties that these early settlers in san juan county encountered there is now presented an opportunity of visualizing not only for ourselves but for large groups of people out in the world the actual herculean feats that they accomplished shed A newspaper man of detroit who has himself experienced perien ced some of the hardships of western pioneer tribulations is anxious to make moving pictures of the old mormon trail through the hole in the rock and other outstanding landmarks to be used in connection with lectures he is frequently asked to deliver before civic and business groups in the east he proposes coming here at his own expense next month furnishing the cameras films etc and preparing them considerable of this will be in technicolor he asks the people of this region to supply him with riding and pack horses and a guide to make the trip to the hole in the rock and other places of particular interest such a portrayal will certainly be a matter of great pride and satisfaction to every descendant of these stalwart pioneers who passed over this forbidding historic trail in 1879 and 1880 and we feel sure that it will bea be a joy and a privilege to do the little part asked of them in order to make the project possible on the first page of this issue will be found a reproduction of mr richardsons Richard sons letter in which he asks for this cooperation at the earliest possible date we wish to assure him that we are willing and ready to give him the little e assistance he requests if the horses and equipment can be supplied from bluff it will save time and part of the tedium of horseback travel it is estimated that the trip from bluff to hole in the rock and return will require about eight days someone thoroughly familiar with the route is needed as a guide and if you cannot afford to give your entire time doubtless a number of people will contribute modest sums to distribute the expense please report to the record all contributions whether horse hire saddles pack saddles and equipment or cash as soon as possible lets show this enthusiastic easterner that we are at least as proud of our pioneers and their outstanding service as he is |
