Show state meet called to consider colorado river associated C civic i v i c bubs C abs sponsors move to protect future water county commissioners and civic leaders of sevier sanpete San pete juab millard tooele thoele deschesne Dus chesne utah uintah box elder cache and salt lake counties will meet at the newhouse hotel in salt lake city on may 15 at a in to discuss the colorado river great basin irrigation and power project the meeting is being called by officials of the associated civic clubs of southern utah and will be attended by representatives of the counties which are most greatly affected each county is being asked to select two influential promotional type men to represent them at the meeting where ways and means of obtaining the greatest possible benefits for utah from the colorado river and boulder dam act will be decided upon it is expected that an organization to permanently sponsor and promote any feasible power and irrigation projects will be formed according to james M sargent president of the associated civic clubs in 1935 the associated group requested governor henry to call a meeting of interested persons to make plans for protecting interest in the colorado river river at that time the group met with the water storage commission but it now appears that the commission is not in a position to promote them the construction of large projects on or connected with the river renewed action on the project was caused by the announcement in washington D C that the boulder dam act was about to be amended to give utah a total of for foi study survey and construction of projects over a period of 48 years the fhe proposed change it is estimated would ben befit california approximately each year it is also understood that the amendment may prohibit utah tah from taking water out of the colorado river drainage basin and transfer it into the great basin as had been considered further it seems doubtful that even though the original boulder dam act gives the upper basin states protection for their water rights in the river for 50 years could they expect to retain those rights after the water has been put to beneficial use elsewhere the new organization if formed will not interfere with the utah water storage commission but will be similar to the water users association that successfully promoted the deer creek project later other counties will b be benefited and called into the organization |
