Show U US S must aid private trade hallm hillman a n holds business no longer able to supply jobs for all without help labor leader declares the christian science monitor or new york sept 26 the time has come when the federal administration must take a hand in supporting private business and initiative in the opinion of sidney H hillman president of the powerful amalgamated clothing workers union in an exclusive interview with the christian science monitor mr hillman asserted it was no longer possible to return to the old depression pre system where businesses could carry the load of employing the nations workers without assistance from the federal government with an unemployment problem of vast proportions which the labor leader held has apparently become a permanent part of the american scene washington must aid business as a form of so cial security for the nation mr hillman scored as wishful thinking any talk of returning to the prosperity of the late hate adding that even in those so called happy days there were vast numbers of persons unable to share in the riches that were making the american standard of living a byword throughout the world at the same time mr hillman cautioned against dangerous experiments peri ments what was needed he held was not cure alls nor shortcuts to economic stability but careful study and a remedying of the economic sy systems sterns shortcomings mr hillman spoke from one of the broadest backgrounds of any of the ranking labor leaders in the united states today As well as being the head of one of the original ten units of the committee for industrial organization and one of the staunchest staunches supporters of john L lewis in the CIO campaign against the american federation of labor mr hillman has organized a number of major industrial centers for the clothing workers has served as a member of the labor advisory board the national industrial recovery board itself and is a member of the academy of political and social science |
