Show Sherlock Holmes Saved Yank's Life HOLLYWOOD Although a figment of the late Conan Doyle's imagination, Sherlock Holmes is credited with saving the life of an American soldier in Germany shortly before VE Day. The soldier, Pfc. John Hes-sler, Hes-sler, related the dramatic experience ex-perience yesterday to Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce, cur- 1 rently staring as the intrepid fictional detective and his doctor friend, in Universal's "Terror by Night." According to Hessler, his platoon pla-toon used to draw lots permitting permit-ting them to go bajck of the lines to view motion picture under U. S. Army auspices. On this particular occasion, Hessler attended a screening of a recent Holmes adventure, "The Woman in Green," which top-lined Rathbone and Bruce. On the soldier's return, he found that the enemy had broken brok-en through and killed all but three members of his platoon, the balance being seriously wounded. "That's why I feel that Sherlock Sher-lock Holmes saved my life!" he told the astounded actors. |
