Show Sugar House Business Leader Returns From Mission Field Resuming his business activities activi-ties in Sugar House after a year's absence is R. YV. Madsen Jr., president of the Sterling Furniture Co., and executive vice president of the Granite Mart who returned at Christmas time with his family from Deliver Deli-ver where he served as president presi-dent of the Western states mission mis-sion of the LBS church Mr. and Mrs. Madsen with their four daughters, Mary, Patricia, Pa-tricia, Joyce and Donna, are established es-tablished again at their residence resi-dence at 5940 Holladay Blvd-. and the three younger girls are about to resume their schooling here, Patricia at the U. of Joyce at Granite high, and Donna Don-na at Olympus Jr., high. Mary Is a U. of U. graduate, and the Madsen's son, Richard W. Ill, a Harvard graduate, is in Boston, Bos-ton, serving in the navy. He has been away irom home six years, serving 3V2 years in the mission field in Hawaii before joining the navy 2V2 years ago. Mr. Madsen said it. is wonderful won-derful to be back home again, but that he had thoroughly en-Joyed en-Joyed his mission work which kept him on the go constantly visiting the stakes, wards, branches and districts of the mission which extends throughout through-out Colorado, New Mexico, Wyoming Wyo-ming and Nebraska and part? pf (South 'Hakota and Uowa-He Uowa-He reported the mission was showing consistent and substantial substan-tial growth in every section, and that he was impressed particu- lariy ny me nospitaoie ana respectful re-spectful . reception . -of mission workers by real leaders in ever? community in the area. During his year away he travelled 25,-000 25,-000 miles by car and 12,000 by train and averaged more than a meeting a day throughout the year- The church has a member ship of more than 7000 in the' mission outside of the five stakes, and new branches and auxiliaries are being steadily added. He said there was a particular par-ticular interest evidenced among ion-Mormons throughout the area in the church welfare plan and in the doctrine of the word of wisdom. Mrs. Madsen, a daughter of the late1 Apostle Melvin J. Bai- i lard with whom she served for ten years as a missionary in the northwestern states, rendered render-ed an invaluable servic as pres-ient pres-ient of the church auxiliaries, ano the girls too participated actively in all phases of missionary mis-sionary work. Donna distinguished distin-guished herself in school activi- J tics In Denver, being, vice pres ient of her school student body and editor of the school paper. She also won a first prize in a statewide poet""- ,'ontest. in which professional writers and college students completed. |
