The meeting, following fol-lowing a turkey dinner al W'ea-i W'ea-i sku Inn, drew a large percen tage of chamber members, in addition to a number of visitors, visi-tors, including city and county coun-ty officials. John C. Barnes, retiring president, pres-ident, gave a report on activities activi-ties and growth of the organization organ-ization during his term of office, of-fice, and outlined projects now in the course of development, and Horace A. Sorensen, the new president, envisioned the vast development of the southeast south-east section and charged the members with pitching in together to-gether to make the most of the opportunities lying before us in the postwar world. Carl Brown conducted the Installation ceremonies, and briefly outlined the history of business development in this area from the formation of the old Sugar House Businessmen's league in 1912 under the 'presidency 'pres-idency of A. C. Smoot (who was present at Wednesday's meeting; meet-ing; to the inception of the present chamber in 1936 with Ray Curtis as its first president. presi-dent. (Mr. Curtis was also in attendance). He reviewed the development de-velopment of the business life of this section from a ' pioneer crossroads to the present teeming teem-ing shopping center and community. com-munity. Mr. Barnes pointed out that the membership of the chamber has doubled within the past year, and that new businesses by the score have opened up so that now nearly every type of merchandise and service is available avail-able to the consumer. Showing the heavy population popula-tion increase in Salt Lake, Mr. Barnes noted that the expansion expan-sion is all to the southeast, and " declared Sugar House itself will soon be the very center of population pop-ulation for the valley and that, a great era of prosperity and opportunity is now upon us. Cannon.-In Cannon.-In appreciation of his outstanding out-standing service during the past year, Mr. Barnes was presented with a fountain pen and pencil set by the chamber. |
