Show Utah to Observe Half Century Of Statehood The Golden Anniversary of Utah's statehood will be duly observed by Utah citizens Jan. 4 Special programs commemorating commem-orating the state's entrance into the Union will be held in an Utah schools and universities and at 8 p.m. in Salt Lake City, the day's events will be- climaxed cli-maxed by a public meeting in the LDS tabernacle where Sen. Abe Murdock will deliver a special spe-cial message from President Harry S. Truman. Dr. E. E. Monson, secretary of state, and chairman of the general committee in charge of the fiftieth aniversary observance observ-ance throughout. Utah is distributing dis-tributing 50,000 souvenir programs pro-grams to Utah schools. The programs pro-grams will be given to all students stu-dents and parents attending special anniversary "Utah Citizenship" Citi-zenship" assemblies now being arranged by school officials for Jan. 4. The souvenir program will carry the preamble to tht; state constitution, a brief his- torical sketch, the names of the first state officers and the names of the six surviving signers of the-'Uta-h constitution, and who will be in attendance at the tabernacle exercises. Utah was the forty-fifth state to join the Union, ami a iiev star was added to the constellation constel-lation of the national flag. When the news reached Utah, fifty years ago Jan. 4, that Utah had been admitted to the union, un-ion, guns were fired, whistles blown and bells set to ringing-Celebrations ringing-Celebrations were held and general gen-eral rejoicing was the order of the day. Two days later, on Jan. 6, Inaugural In-augural ceremonies for the newly new-ly elected state officers took place in the Salt Lake Tabernacle. Taber-nacle. The building was beautifully beauti-fully decorated with a huge flag, 132 feet long and 78 feet wide, suspended from the ceiling, and a chorus of 1000 school children chil-dren gave the first rendition of "Utah We Love Thee." The six surviving signers of the Utah constitution still living liv-ing and invited to attend the services Jan. 4, are: N. J. Kerr, Portland, Ore-: Mons Peterson, Moab; Elmer E. Corfman, Hollywood, Hol-lywood, Calif-; and Noble War-rum, War-rum, Charles N- Strevell and Louis L. Coray, all of Salt Lake. |
