Show J - , ' . .... L I SUGAR HOUSE PLAZA . . . center of Santa Clans' Headquarters. This cheery Yuletide scene is familiar to thousands of holiday visitors who are thronging to Sugar House this Christmas season. around the COR ' Nl I SUGAR HOUSE E ! j With the Editor i This past week seems to have been Southeasterners' time to shine ... as far as the downtown down-town papers were concerned at any rate. E. Cecil McGavin, well-known author and historian and the chronicler of The Bulletin's "Sugar "Su-gar House Sermonettes," has hit the headlines once again, according ac-cording to the latest reports we . received from publishing quar- ters. This time Mr. McGavin has published a new book . . . "Na'u-voo "Na'u-voo the Beautiful." We haven't seen a copy of it as yet, but according ac-cording to the reports we've heard it is another .ne piece of , work. The book reviewer in The Deseret News calls it "... a book with much valuable information, presented in an interesting style . . . good reading . . ." Busy as he is with his writing duties, Mr. McGavin has graciously graci-ously consented to furnish us with more interesting material on the fascinating subjects of early Sugar House. We received receiv-ed an advance packet of material the other day and can promise all Bulletin readers a treat in weeks to come. We heard the other day that one of our favorites, Lucile Peterson, Pe-terson, the ballerina who formerly for-merly hailfed from these parts, is back in town so we called her up to extend our welcome greetings. greet-ings. Lucile said that she was thrilled to get back "home" for the holidays. She arrived a week ago Monday- and expects to be around for another couple of weeks. Her last big show, "Follow the Girls" closed its road , tour in Chicago three, weeks ago after a very successful season. Lucile said that she read our write-up of Oct. 18, when she took over the lead ballerina's role and thought it was "wonderful," "won-derful," which we thought was a nice thing to say. Dropped in to see Glenn Tripp and Howard Bringhurst down at Apex Electric the other day and those two started reminiscing when I asked Glen how long he'd been in business in Sugar House. Glenn had a hard time remembering the exact month he started, but it's been well over 20 years, in fact, just a little lit-tle while after his discharge from the army after World War I. Howard remembered seeing Glenn many times atop a utility pole making repairs in those days. They both agreed that there had been a lot of changes O around here in 20 years. Glenn added that there'd probably be plenty more before he was ready to retire. Our very good friend and Bulletin Bul-letin correspondent .Miss Aure-lia Aure-lia Bennion, librarian of the Sprague library here In Sugar House has been coming in for her fair share of publicity lately, late-ly, too. She has long been active ac-tive in educational affairs in Utah and this time she has been appointed to head the planning committee of the Utah Library association. This committee is presenting its plans to the 1947 state legislature to create a state O public library agency which will expand reading facilities throughout the state and qualify Utah for an estimated $25,000 yearly federal library grant. |
