Show ' Lour .... I Community Both Lt. Charles J. Larson of the police department and Supt. W. F. Walker of the local post office reported a quiet week after aft-er the Christmas rush. At the same time, both fully agreed that this Christmas season was the busiest in history. Overtime Parking Violators In the month of December, Lt. Larson reported, 99 tickets for overtime traffic irregularities were issued by local police officers. offi-cers. This is a result of the department's de-partment's new "get tough" policy pol-icy on habitual over-time parking park-ing violators. Saturday Record-Breaker In his four years as head of the local department, Lt. Larson stated Monday that he had never seen the likes of the Saturday before Christmas for jammed up traffic conditions. On Saturday, he said, cars were lined up two act in onlirl formation from the 21st So.-llth East interaction interac-tion clear on south to Stratford Ave. In fact, he said, he had never seen conditions so bad in 15 years of traffic enforcement service. Creditable Record of No Accidents It is a credit to the force that despite the greatly increased volume of traffic in the Sugar House area and the over-crowded conditions on the streets and crosswalks, there were no major accidents reported during the holidays. Nor were there any injuries reported. Officer Nelson OK Officer Paul Nelson, the policeman po-liceman who was seriously wounded in a gun scuffle a month ago, is up and around again, but has not been released for active duty by his physician. He has visited the local station several times. Lt. Larson says that they are anxious to have him back on the force again. "Just About Cleaned Out" "Just about cleaned out, is the way Supt. W. F. Walker described de-scribed the post-Christmas Rush conditions at the Post Office. Business is tapering off to normal nor-mal this week, after the busiest Christmas season in the history of the local branch. "There is no question about it," Mr. Walker Walk-er stated. "This is THE biggest year in history, both for the Sugar Su-gar House station and the main post office down town." Results of the actual amount of business handled by the office will not be known until the inventory has been completed "sometime after the first of the year." Excellent Extra Help Mr. Walker said that one pt the most important factors in the success of the Christmas work was due to the high calibre cali-bre of extra help the post office of-fice employed this year. Also, the delivery of parcel post packages at the Redman Storage company helped to ease the crowded conditions con-ditions at the post office. |
