Show Inter-Stake Basketball League By Lowell Patton In a brief resume of last week's games in the Sugar House stake, Emerson defeated Hawthorne 34 to 25; Bryan in an extra three-minute period beat a hard fighting Sugar House rrew 44 to 42; the last game of the night pitted Marlborough against a strong Richards five, with Marlborough retaining it's league lead by a stunning victory vic-tory 51 to 39. To wind up the first round of play in the Highland stake, Parleys took a 61 to 22 win over Park Avenue to remain in second; sec-ond; in the Imperial-Stratford game, Stratford, after lagging in the first three quarters came to life in the last quarter to take the game 36-28. Highland Park, having clinched the league for the first round drew a bye. During the two-week holiday in which no games will be played, play-ed, let's see .what has put the top teams where they are. Marlborough, Marl-borough, the impressive team of the Sugar House stake, has won six with no defeats. With a team record like this it is hard to pick the individuals who are outstanding. Don Patton, a left-handed forward, for-ward, is probably the highest scorer of the league with an approximate average of 15 points per game. He hails from West Virginia where he played independent inde-pendent ball and was on the local lo-cal YMCA team which took runner-up honors in the National YMCA tournament in South Carolina. Getting a lot of experience expe-rience in the service, I know we can expect a lot from him from here on out. A great pair on this Marlborough Marlbor-ough team are their stellar center cen-ter Don Riggs, and consistent guard Ed Kilgore. Their basketball basket-ball career started in a neigh-borhod neigh-borhod gang, from which Paul Hansen molded a champion team. The friendship of these two players continued into M Men ball at Edgehill ward. Playing Play-ing for this ward they took second sec-ond place in the All-Church four years ago. They were also selected se-lected for the All-Church team the same year. Separated by the army, where both of them were on championship teamp, they are now back into basketball hoping to carry another great team into the church finals. In the Highland stake, Highland High-land Park is now in first place with a total of four wins and 1 no losses. As in the other stake leage, it is hard to pick the top men who make H.P.'s team a success. Lutzen Buma, the coach left it up to yours truly to pick the men to write up as he didn't wish to commit himself. "Shummy" Jensen, a good fellow fel-low at the pivot post, has played play-ed M Men ball since he was old enough with this same team. With precise playing he keeps the men running smooth on the floor. He has participated only in district playoffs, but thinks this year the team has a good chance f.o go into the church finals. Richard Warner, a guy that has made a name for himself in tennis by taking the inter-mountairi inter-mountairi championship this year, plays a forward position on this Highland Park team. Because Be-cause he's a good shooter and worker, the coach expects a lot from this player in the crucial j game with Parleys which will be their next contest. |
