Show Sugar House Sermoncttcs o by E. Cecil McGavin This is the sixth in a series of articles on the early day history of Sugar House. The scries is presented under the sponsorship of Sugar House Camp, Sons of Utah rioncrrs. It was the philosophy of President Brigham Young that his people should become independent in-dependent in jevery respect. At that time when social and commercial com-mercial intercourse were impossible im-possible with the outside world, except at great expense in time, labor, and money, it was his practice to encourage his people to produce everything every-thing they needed. From the pulpit his wisdom was thundered thun-dered in every part of the territory ter-ritory where he gave advice to the pioneers. "We want you henceforth to be a self-sustaining people. Hear it, O, Israel! hear it neighbors, friends, and enemies, ene-mies, this is what the Lord requires re-quires of this people. Ye Latter-day Saints must learn to sustain yourselves, produce everything you need to eat, drink, or wear; and if you cannot can-not obtain all you wish for today, to-day, learn to do without that which you cannot purchase and pay for; and bring your minds into subjection that you must and will live within your means. "Instead of searching after , what the Lord is going to do for us, let us enquire what we can do for ourselves. The Lord has done his share of the work; he has surrounded us with the elements containing wheat, meat, flax, wool, silk, fruit, and everything with which to build up, beautify and glorify Zion of the last days, and it is our business to mould these elements to our wants and necessities, according accord-ing to the knowledge we now have and the wisdom we can obtain from the heavens through our faithfulness. Tn this way will the Lord bring Zion upon the earth, and in no I other." !
