Show NOTES FROM WASHINGTON Mr. Guy J. Swope, of Harris-burg, Harris-burg, Pennsylvania, whose name today was submitted by President Roosevelt to the United States Senate for the Governorship of Puerto Rico, has had considerable experience in public life, his most recent having been as Auditor of Puerto Rico. Upon the confirmation of his appointment by the Senate, Mr. Swope will succeed Admiral William Wil-liam D. Leahy, who recently resigned re-signed his post as Governor of Puerto Rico to accept the Ambassadorship Am-bassadorship to France. Mr. Charles Harwood, of New York, whose name today was submitted bv President Roosevelt to the United States Senate for the Governorship of the Virgin Islands, has practiced law in New York for many years and more recently has served as Judge in the Canal Zone. Upon the con-j firmation of his appointment by the Senate, Mr. Harwood will succeed Lawrence W. Cramer, recently re-cently resigned Governor of the Virgin Islands. Director Howard A. Gray of the Bituminous Coal Division of the Department of the Interior today announced a tentative change in the procedure for handling hand-ling requests for the Division to extend immediate, temporary relief re-lief while final action is pending on petitions seeking adjustments in minimum prices and marketing market-ing rules. Reporting an excellent fiscal condition for Hawaii, increased bank deposits, an all-time high in tourist travel, and new figures on the racial composition of the Territory. Governor Joseph B. Poindexter today submitted his annual report to Secretary of the Interior Harold L. Ickes. Although technically the number num-ber of aliens represented in Hawaii's Haw-aii's population amounts to 18.21. per cent, this figure does not correctly portray the population set-up. The largest and most comprehensive compre-hensive exhibition of Indian art ever assembled will open on January Jan-uary 22nd at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City Secretary of the Interior Harold L. Ickes announced today. The exhibit is sponsored jointly joint-ly by the Museum and the United States Department of the Interior, Inter-ior, its Indian Arts and Crafts Board and its Office of Indian Affairs. It will be open for three months and will occupy three floors of the Museum at 11 West 53rd Street, New York City. Deer Creek Dam neared completion, com-pletion, construction of the 47-mile 47-mile Salt Lake Aqueduct recorded record-ed good progress, and the railroad rail-road relocation around Deer Creek reservoir site was finished during 1940 on the Provo River Reclamation Reclam-ation Project in Utah, according to a report by Commissioner John Page, Bureau of Reclamation to Secretary of the Interior Harold L. Ickes today. Approximately 2,400,000 cubic yards of earth and rock fill have been placed in Deer Creek Dam, leaving only 470,000 cubic yards for completion. Penstock pipes and high pressure gates were installed in-stalled in the outlet tunnel and construction of the trash-rack structure was reported complete. Most of the concrete was placed in the spillway and spillway gate structure and the radial gate installation in-stallation was progressing. More than half the concrete pipe section of the Salt Lake Aqueduct has been completed and most of the structures are finish ed. About 25,000 feet of 69-incli inside diameter pipe have beer laid of the 47,300 feet necessary. Early in the year the relocated Denver and Rio Grande Westerr Railroad was completed and trains were routed over the new line 11 miles in length, enabling the contractor to remove the old line from the dam and reservoir areas |
