Of course, of major importance was the sugar millirst sugar factory in the western hemisphere. Another unique industry for this continent 0 was the Sugar House mulberry tree farm which produced the first silk worms, usually associated with the Orient. For the first western consumption, made by westerners, Sugar House area had a nail factory, a tannery, and the first match factory, and iron foundry. The first Mormon Saints to see the Sugar House area were W. C. A. Smoot, Samuel Turnbow, Hayden Church, Benjamin Stewart, and James Stratton. These men camped on Kanyon Creek, now in the heart of the Sugar House district. |
