Show Sophomore Boys At Bountiful May Start New Track Tradition By DAVE WIGHAM Clipper Sports KAYSVILLE It's been said that the future of any high school sports program rests on the shoulders shoul-ders of the sophomores. That being the case the future for the boys track and field program at Bountiful Bounti-ful looks bright. A COUPLE of weeks ago the schools of Region Four got together at Davis High to determine deter-mine their sophomore region champions. As it turned out the Braves sophomore class came away winners with a team total 154 points. Host Davis was in second place with 147 points followed by Highland, Viewmont, East and Woods Cross. The Braves used a combination of individual strength and depth to win this meet as they came up winners win-ners in nine of the seventeen events. Davis won five events, all field events, with Highland and Woods Cross each winning one. BOUNTIFUL collected their other first place ribbons on the strength of two athletes who were double winners. Matt Bombard won both the 100 and 200 meter dashes, Steve Martinez came on strong to win both the 1 10 and the 300 meter hurdle races. Stephen Jones was the man of the meet as the ace distance runner came up with three wins in the meet. Jones won the 800 meters, thhe 100 meters and finally the 3200 meters to finish off a great day for him. THE OTHER Bountiful first place ribbons came in the relay events where they won both the mile and medley events while placing plac-ing second in the sprint relay. Members of the mile team were Doucette, Bombard, Dean and Harris while the team of Doucette, Steed, Rampton and Statten claimed top honors in the medley. The best race of the day proved to be the 100 meters where Bombard Bom-bard was clocked at 11.45 with Greg Sharp of Viewmont right on his heels with a time of 1 1 .46. TE WINNING Brave squad also got points in the 400 meters with Jim Rampton in third and Darren Dean in fourth. Mark Statten made it a one-two finish in the 800 meters with his second place showing while Mike Steed was fourth in the 200 meters. The field events were also a big source for points for the Braves as Dave Smith picked up a second in the shot and a fifth in the discus; Dave Critchley was third in the high jump and fourth in the discus; Mike Steed was second in the long jump and Mike Doucette fifth in the javelin. DAVE BRANNAN had a good meet for the Wildcats of Woods Cross as he cleared the pole vault at 11'6" to win that event. Jody Wager picked up their other points with his fifth place effort in the 800 meters. Greg Sharp was the big point getter get-ter for the Vikes with his second in the 100 and then a third in the long jump. Other point getters were Steve Murray a second in the discus dis-cus and a third in the javelin, Mike Goodrich with a second in the high jump and a sixth in the intermediate intermedi-ate hurdles. Dan Hamilton was third in the discus for the Vikes while Lynn Oyler was fifth in the shot. |
