| Show LOTS OF FOR SETTLERS last year they made entry on nearly acres of land As an answer to the impression which seems seem a to exist that all the public landkof land sot any value have long ago been bee n taken up secretary lane in an addan advance e statement from his annual report cals attention to the fact that since arch 4 1913 settlers have made entry on nearly acres of public linds an area equal to that of connecticut massachusetts new hampsmire Hamps hampshire bire and new je jersey arsey combined during the same period practically a much more coal and other mineral land of the west has been examined in detail in 40 acre tracts by the geological survey and most of it has been thrown open to settlement or purchase some of these lands such as those which in elude workable deposits of phosphate or oil are still withdrawn pending suitable legislation tor for their disposal or use another important activity in public land classification to which the secretary calls attention is the designation of lands tor for entry as enlarged or acre homesteads designations under this law approved by him cover acres the extract from the Secre report contains a series ot of maps of twelve twelve public land states showing in graphic torm form 1 the areas withdrawn from entry in these states between march 1913 and july 1914 2 the areas restored to entry 3 the designations under the enlarged homestead law and 4 land taken up by settlers thus tor for example the map of montana shows the total area for the state acres lands withdrawn from entry acres lands restored to entry after examination acres lands designated under the enlarged home stend stead lawn law 4 dacres nacres na acres cres and aa lands entered by setlers sellers acres the other states in which public land activities have been large and which are discussed by the secretary are utah wyoming colorado new mexico idaho washington oregon north dakota arizona california and nevada |
